MRIS Cares about Haiti

Rockville, MD - Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. (MRIS) announces that the company will contribute a total of $45,000 to three organizations active in relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti.   Hope for Haiti's Children, Meds and Food for Kids, and Doctors Without Borders each will receive a donation of $15,000 from the Rockville-based real estate information technology company that also is the largest multiple listing service in the nation.

Immediately following the January 12 earthquake that struck Haiti, MRIS employees expressed an interest in helping the relief effort, especially for the many Haitian children who found themselves without family, food or medical care following the natural disaster. At the direction of the MRIS Board of Directors Charitable Contributions Committee, a staff group researched and evaluated an assortment of large and small, global and in-country charitable organizations that are active in the Haitian relief efforts. Discussion that included both board members and staff resulted in the selection of the three recipient organizations named above. The amount, $45,000, holds special meaning for MRIS, as it represents a nearly $1 donation for each of its subscriber customers.

“We don’t want to forget that many people in Haiti are still suffering, even though the story is out of the headlines,” says Diane Smith, MRIS Director of Project Management & Quality Assurance. Ms. Smith led the staff group and the company initiative now known as MRIS Cares, in researching and making recommendations for this charitable donation.

MRIS intends to keep MRIS Cares an active staff group, looking for future giving opportunities for consideration. In recent years, MRIS has contributed to relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the tsunami that hit southeast Asia in 2004.
